As Love Incarnate we want to fight the social injustice in this selfish world and we cannot be silent about it. As our vision states, we want to get to a place where no one goes a day without food and shelter and the knowledge of God, making sure that everyone is skilled and has the basic necessities of life, and we strongly believe that given that if we Love God, Love People and work together it is possible.
Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter
– Martin Luther King Jr
Our organisation has been to areas in Pietermaritzburg where the living conditions of the people are extremely shocking. We have been to Masukwana, eMbali and eMatsheni and there is much to be done to eradicate poverty. The unemployment rate is high amongst the youth. According to Statistics SA, youth unemployment is shockingly at 43.1% in the Msunduzi Municipality. As a result youth resort to crime or prostitution. We as the organisation deal mostly with prostitution in the notorious street of Price Alfred.
We were driving in Prince Alfred Street one day and our hearts ached for our sisters who sell their bodies just to put bread on the table. What is horrific is that their ages range from 15 to 55. This totally dissolved our hearts, we cried out to God on how we can help them to leave the life in the streets. We then decided that we should just go chat to them on the streets and find the root causes of their current situation. We found that the majority, if not all, don’t want to be there but it seems as if there is nothing that they can do because there is no source of income. The trips to Prince Alfred Street occurred on Thursdays. We then added soup as a form of an ice breaker just to get the ladies talking so that we can help. The visits then moved to Friday because most people from our team are students or people with daily jobs. We then started to serve coffee and bread to the ladies in the streets which give successful results in terms of contacts. The organisation has been doing this for the past 8 months without fail.
We have a team that does follow ups (home visits) during the week; this is where we find out more about the ladies and get to the root cause of their problems pertaining to why they are on the streets. We also share the word of God and find ways that we can assist them to get off the streets and also provide food parcels to sustain them and their families.
In the streets, we met Sister X, she went to the streets because she couldn’t find a job and she had lost hope. She gave us her contacts and we did a follow up on her. She told us that she wants to start a business in town selling hot dogs. Our follow-up team then assisted her to start her business, she then continued her studies with ABET. For more stories about ladies in Prince Alfred Street, please follow our blog and subscribe to our newsletters.
We cannot be silent when our people continue to live under oppression, while the gap between the rich and the poor is huge. Together we can make a better society for everyone.
Love Incarnate. Love God, Love People.
